Self-solemnizing means you can legally marry yourselves without an officiant or witnesses.

That’s right — in Colorado, the couple themselves can sign their own marriage license and make the marriage official.

Is Self-Solemnizing Legal in Colorado?

Yes. Colorado law allows couples to solemnize their own marriage.

Once you obtain your marriage license from a Colorado county clerk, you may sign it yourselves and return it for recording.

Will a Colorado Self-Solemnized Marriage Be Recognized in Other States?

Yes. A marriage that is legally performed in Colorado — including one that is self-solemnized — is generally recognized in other states.

Under long-standing legal principles in the United States, if a marriage is valid in the state where it took place, it is typically recognized across the country.

However, because self-solemnization is relatively uncommon outside of Colorado and a few other states, couples occasionally encounter confusion from officials who are unfamiliar with the process.

For example, couples have reported that some local agencies — such as a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) — may question a marriage license that does not list an officiant.

This usually happens simply because the employee reviewing the document has never seen a self-solemnized license before.

Social Security and Federal Agencies

Federal agencies, including the Social Security Administration, recognize legally issued Colorado marriage certificates — including those that are self-solemnized.

What If Someone Questions Your Marriage License?

If you ever encounter confusion, it can help to politely explain that:

Colorado law allows couples to solemnize their own marriage
The marriage license was legally issued and recorded by a Colorado county clerk

In most cases, once the situation is clarified, the document is accepted without issue.

A Helpful Tip

When you receive your marriage certificate from the county, request several certified copies. These are the official documents typically required when updating things like:

Social Security records
driver’s licenses
passports
bank accounts
insurance policies

Having multiple certified copies makes these updates much easier.

How Do You Self-Solemnize in Colorado?

The process is straightforward.

1. Obtain your marriage license

Visit a Colorado county clerk’s office.

Both partners typically must appear in person.

2. Plan your ceremony

Decide where and how you want to mark the moment.

Some couples:

gather with a small group of family

3. Sign your marriage license

After your ceremony (or whenever you choose), sign the license yourselves.

4. Return the license

Return it to the county clerk for recording.

Once recorded, your marriage becomes official.
